James's Story

In March 2024 myself and my partner welcomed our beautiful baby girl into the world. As you can imagine, we suddenly became very sleep deprived and hungry, as this tiny human needed us constantly. We slowly began navigating new parent life and at around 8/9 weeks in, James started to rapidly lose weight and was not himself. He was visibly unwell, but kept putting it down to having a new baby and not having the time to look after ourselves. After pushing him to finally go and get some tests done at the doctors, the GP surgery called an ambulance for James, as his ketone levels were way too high. He was suffering from Diabetic Ketoacidosis, whereby his blood sugar levels were far too high, due to his pancreas no longer producing insulin, meaning that harmful levels of ketones had been building up in his body. If he had not gone into hospital, he'd have had a heart attack. For context, normal blood sugar levels are between 4 and 9 - at the point of James going to hospital, his levels were in the 30s.

After a few days in hospital and on a IV drip, James had been put onto insulin and was slowly becoming his normal cheeky and chirpy self.
James is now around 4 months into his treatment and is officially a Type 1 Diabetic, at 28 years old. He is doing amazingly and I couldn't be prouder of him for working so hard and learning to deal and live with this.
Forever proud of you Jim x
