Why we’re Fundraising
As some of you may know, my partner Bobby was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in July 2021.
I'll be the first to admit that, before his diagnosis, I knew very little about the condition. Like many people, I often confused it with Type 2 diabetes, which is largely influenced by lifestyle factors. It wasn't until we started our relationship that I truly began to understand what living with Type 1 Diabetes actually means and honestly, it was a huge eye opener to say the least.
Type 1 Diabetes isn't caused by diet or lifestyle. It's an autoimmune condition where the body's immune system attacks and destroys the insulin producing cells in the pancreas. In simple terms, an organ that once worked automatically suddenly stops doing its job.
But that's only part of the picture. The reality of living with Type 1 Diabetes is physically and mentally relentless. It means constantly monitoring blood glucose levels, calculating insulin doses, and making nearly 200 extra health related decisions every single day. There are no days off, no holidays from it, and no opportunity to simply switch off.
Even with incredible advances in technology such as insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors, there are still middle of the night alarms, dangerous low blood sugars, managing food, exercise, stress, illness and even hot weather. The mental load is enormous, and it's something that people living with Type 1 Diabetes carry every minute of every day.
On Sunday 27th September, Bobby and myself will be walking 10 miles across London’s most iconic bridges and we would love your help to reach our target of £500. We’re fundraising to raise awareness and money for this incredible cause. Type 1 Diabetes is something that's become very close to my heart, and this event is an opportunity to bring people together while raising funds that can genuinely make a difference.
If you're able to donate, even just £1, we would be so incredibly grateful. Every donation to Diabetes UK helps fund life changing research into better treatments and, ultimately, a cure. It also provides support for people who are newly diagnosed, offers expert advice and services, campaigns for better access to diabetes technology and care, and works to improve mental health support for those living with the condition.
Thank you so much for reading, sharing and supporting us. Every donation, no matter how small, really does make a difference. 💙
Love and hugs,
Bella and Bobby💙
