My Story
Welcome to my Diabetes UK Wellness Walk fundraising page!
I’m just a girl who has been living with diabetes every single day since the age of 16 — and if you know me, you’ll know I don’t let it define me. I live my life to the fullest, I work, I eat what I enjoy, I see my friends, I go to the gym and I’m always on the go. From the outside, you probably wouldn’t even know I have diabetes, I refuse to let it stop me from enjoying life or doing the things I love.
But behind the scenes, diabetes can sometimes be a completely different story. Just sometimes, it catches up with me. The constant checking, injections, blood sugar highs and lows and treating hypos can leave me tired, snappy, suffering from brain fog and mentally exhausted. I might not always show it, but managing diabetes is something I have to think about every single day.
For years, I was shy about my diabetes and the constant questions, so I never wanted anything visible to show I have diabetes. It took four years of my doctors encouraging me before I finally agreed to use a FreeStyle Libre sensor. It completely changed my life. Something I once felt embarrassed about became something I embraced, and having access to the right technology has made managing diabetes so much easier. My friends always ask if they can connect to my air-tag on my arm, this Air-tag monitors my glucose levels - makes life easier for me!
I’m incredibly sad that NHS pressures and cutbacks can mean people don’t always have access to the things they genuinely need and depend on.
Recently, I ran out of sensor while I was busy working, I completely forgot that morning to replace my sensor… it happens we are only HUMAN. Even after being on the phone to 111 they had issued me a prescription, the lady behind the counter wouldn’t authorise it as she saw I had my prescription for the month but it was an emergency, I suffered that day. These aren’t luxuries — for people living with diabetes, they can be essential to safely managing everyday life.
I want to raise awareness and help contribute towards improving diabetes healthcare, supporting better access to essential technology, treatment and resources for people living with diabetes. No one should feel like they are struggling alone or going without the care they need.
Every donation, no matter how small, can help make a difference and contribute towards a better future for diabetes care. ❤️
