Wellness Walk London Bridges

My Story

Welcome to my Diabetes UK Wellness Walk fundraising page!

I’m walking for Diabetes UK this September to support the 5.8 million people in the UK who live with diabetes, day in day out. And you can too, just by making a donation.

Did you know someone is diagnosed with diabetes every two minutes?

Diabetes UK are on a mission to create a world where diabetes can do no harm by funding vital research into life-changing treatments and providing support to help people to live well with diabetes. But they need our help. No matter how much you can give, it will make a difference.

So please donate today.

I was diagnosed in 2008 with Type 2 Diabetes, and have managed to control it with diet and exercise  (and some pills!). The care  and support I have received is outstanding, and I want to give something back.  I look forward to your support.

My Updates

All ready - almost!

Sunday 14th Jun
I now have my Wellness Walk T-shirt, my Beanie Hat, my shoe laces and pin badge - and my walker number - 5720. The walk is in 15 weeks, so still a bit of training to do - especially as I have not done a sponsored walk since my Boy's Brigade days in about 1965!  If you are able, I'd be delighted if you could show your support. I have received exceptional care from the Diabetic nurses in both Carnoustie and Edinburgh and I want to give something back.

So excited!

Friday 12th Jun
Another milestone! My T-shirt and walker number has arrived.  I now have the shoe laces and the pin badge. Just waiting for the Beanie Hat (I might need it in September!) If you are able to help me reach my new target, I'd be very grateful. I'm so pleased I am fit enough to take on this challenge, and able to give something back for the excellent care I have received since my Type 2 diagnosis in 2008.

Those shoes are made for walking

Thursday 11th Jun
Tried out the new lightweight walking shoes, and feet felt much more comfortable. Next time, I shall try wearing them with the special socks I got.  Also received my special shoe laces and pin badge - just waiting for the beanie hat!

New shoes

Thursday 4th Jun
Over the last few days, the mountain hiking boots I have been using seemed to be very heavy in the hot weather, and so I invested in a lighter pair which hopefully will be advantageous in September when I do the walk. Thanks for all the donations so far. Training going well, My final training nearer September might be the Water of Leith Walk from Balerno to Leith which is 12 miles!

Happy feet!

Saturday 30th May
These wonderful toe socks (merino wool!) arrived today. Hopefully they will do what they say on the packet and prevent blisters on the walk. And they stop smells!!!

Hot Weather!

Friday 29th May
Training slightly delayed by the exceptionally hot weather which reduced my time walking outside. Made up for it in the gym. Hopefully in September the weather might be kinder!! That said, was lovely to see the sun.

Improving!

Monday 25th May
Managed to do 7.41 miles in one stretch, including time in the gym to strengthen my legs for walking! Very encouraging!

Training progress

Sunday 24th May
Today, 24th May I managed to walk 9.39 miles in three stages. Will  be aiming over the next few weeks to do 10 miles in 2 stages and at least 10 miles in 1 stage before the actual day in September.

Thank you to my Sponsors
