Ten miles, a lot of bridges, and a confession
I should start with that confession.
Plenty of people doing this walk have a story behind it. A parent, a partner, a diagnosis of their own. I don't. Nobody close to me lives with diabetes, and I'd be fibbing if I claimed otherwise on a page where people are about to give me their money.
Here's my actual reason: someone told me there's a ten mile walk across London that takes in a great run of the city's bridges, and I thought that sounded like a brilliant way to spend a day. Tower Bridge. Westminster. The wobbly one. On foot, in order, all in one go. I was sold before I'd read the rest of the page.
So the fundraising started as the price of admission. Then I read what the money actually does, and it turns out I've accidentally picked a very good cause to be shallow about.
Diabetes UK keeps a helpline staffed with counsellors who pick up the phone on the days when someone really needs them to. They fund local support groups, which by their own description change lives one cup of tea at a time, and I love that they put it that way. They campaign for better care, and they fund research into preventing the things that frighten people most about diabetes: sight loss, amputations, stroke.
They're also honest about the fact that diabetes doesn't land evenly. People in poverty and people from certain ethnic backgrounds face higher risks and worse outcomes, and tackling that is written into what they do rather than tacked on at the end.
None of that needs me to have a personal story. It just needs funding.
So: I'm walking ten miles, I'm crossing a lot of bridges, and I'll be insufferable about it afterwards. If you'd like to sponsor me, small is genuinely fine. A few quid from a lot of people is how these pages fill up, and I'd rather have twenty people give a little than ask anyone for a lot.
Thank you for reading this far, and thank you in advance if you chip in. I'll report back with photos of the bridges and, realistically, my feet.
