Wellness Walk London Bridges

My Story

I'm taking part in Wellness Walk London Bridges this September to support Diabetes UK and the 5.8 million people in the UK who live with type 1 Diabetes.

Type 1 Diabetes isn't caused by diet or lifestyle. It's an autoimmune condition where the body's immune system attacks and destroys the insulin producing cells in the pancreas. In simple terms, an organ that once worked automatically suddenly stops doing its job.

But that's only part of the picture. The reality of living with Type 1 Diabetes is physically and mentally relentless. It means constantly monitoring blood glucose levels, calculating insulin doses, and making nearly 200 extra health related decisions every single day. There are no days off, no holidays from it, and no opportunity to simply switch off.

Even with incredible advances in technology such as insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors, there are still middle of the night alarms, dangerous low blood sugars, managing food, exercise, stress, illness and even hot weather. The mental load is enormous, and it's something that people living with Type 1 Diabetes carry every minute of every day.

Did you know someone is diagnosed with diabetes every two minutes? Diabetes UK are on a mission to create a world where diabetes can do no harm by funding vital research into life-changing treatments and providing support to help people like me to live well with diabetes.
But they need our help. No matter how little you can give, it WILL make a difference.
