Wellness Walk 2025

Saturday 9th Aug Hi my name is Andrew Gaffney, I was diagnosed with type 1 Diabetes in August of 2023 at the age of 19. I noticed that i was drastically losing weight at a rapid pace and went to the doctors to get checked out. After i got my blood results back I was told that I was going through DKA (diabetic ketoacidosis) and my sugar levels were in the mid 40s. After spending 2 days in the hospital I had to learn how to take insulin, look after my body, new diet, how to carbohydrate count, it was a lot. Coming up on 2 years as a Type 1 Diabetic it hasn’t been a smooth journey, it has been mentally draining and exhausting. Constantly having to monitor bloods, carb count every meal and making sure I look after my body is challenging. This disease is a 24/7, 365 day illness. The support the NHS, Diabetes UK and my family have given me during this difficult time in my life has been incredible. So i’m doing this walk to raise money to give back, in order to help myself and other diabetics to help with supplies or new treatments and tests to hopefully one day make our lives easier to live with disease. I’ll be doing this walk alongside my older sister Lucy, any donations are much appreciated as we try and hit our goal. Thank you all very much - Andrew ❤️ Share
