My Story
For the second year, I'm taking part in the Diabetes UK London Bridges Wellness Walk.
I first became aware of the impact of diabetes as a student nurse on a heart surgery ward at King’s College Hospital in London. So many of the patients were living with diabetes, and the build-up of glucose in their blood vessels had directly contributed to their need for surgery.
Fast forward 20 years, and I was told I was prediabetic myself - my body was struggling to process carbohydrates, causing glucose levels in my blood to rise.
I managed to turn things around by focusing on a lower-carb diet, inspired in particular by the work of Dr David Unwin. Alongside adjusting my diet, I started lifting weights a couple of times a week and walking more. The combination worked: my weight dropped, and my blood sugar returned to a healthy range.
Now, I’m walking with my good friend Mark to raise funds for Diabetes UK - both to support those who are more severely affected by the condition, and as a healthy reminder to myself to keep off the chocolate and chips!
Please consider sponsoring us if you can.
