Wellness Walk London Bridges

My Story

Welcome to my Diabetes UK Wellness Walk fundraising page!

My son Oliver was diagnosed with type 1 Diabetes in December 2024 after being admitted to hospital in severe DKA. He was basically unconscious for 3 days and lost so much weight. It was the scariest time of my life. We spent New year in the hospital and we started 2025 with a very different life to what we had before.

Our days are now filled with alarms, finger prick tests, carb counting, planning, working out insulin, waiting for numbers to change, hospital appointments, blood tests. We have many sleepless nights.

Everything he does affects his blood sugars. Playing with friends outside, stress, the weather, even playing the computer. He often has to stop playing to sit and let his numbers rise again before he can carry on. He has to wait 10-15 before he can eat anything to allow his insulin a chance to work in his system. His body can feel the after effects of every high and low blood sugar. It can take him awhile to recover, which can mean being late for school or missing out.

His childhood isn’t like other children. He has so much more to think about every day. From 8 years old he has had to make daily decisions just to stay alive.

Oliver has dealt with this all like the true hero he is, with courage and humour.  It is at his request we are doing this walk as he wants to raise awareness about type 1.

Please support his efforts and give what you can. I’m so proud of him for wanting to do this…..

We are walking for Diabetes UK this September to support the 5.8 million people in the UK who live with diabetes, day in day out. And you can too, just by making a donation.

Diabetes UK are on a mission to create a world where diabetes can do no harm by funding vital research into life-changing treatments and providing support to help people to live well with diabetes. But they need our help. No matter how much you can give, it will make a difference.

So please donate today.
