My Story- Why I’m Taking on This Challenge
Welcome to my Diabetes UK Wellness Walk fundraising page!
I’ve lived with Type 1 diabetes since I was 11 years old, so I know first-hand just how much this disease can affect every part of your life.
Diabetes isn’t simply about “watching your sugar.” It’s constantly checking your blood glucose levels, thinking about what you’re eating, working out how much insulin you need, and taking multiple injections every single day. There is always something to think about. Even when you’re trying to get on with normal life, diabetes never really switches off.
One of the biggest worries is hypos — knowing that your blood sugar can drop unexpectedly and that you always need to be prepared. My family have lived with that worry alongside me for years, and I know how difficult it can be for the people who love someone with Type 1 diabetes too.
I’m also a PE teacher, which makes this cause even more personal. Seeing children I work with having to deal with diabetes, and watching the challenges it can bring to their young lives, hits hard. I know exactly what it feels like to have to think about your diabetes when you should simply be concentrating on being a child, enjoying school, playing sport and living your life.
I’ll be taking on this sponsored walk alongside my friend, Zoe, who is also Type 1 diabetic. At work, we’re always looking out for one another — whether that means having an extra Lucozade or some chocolate nearby, just in case one of us needs it.
Now, we’re taking that support one step further and walking together for everyone affected by diabetes.
We’re doing this for the children who are growing up learning to manage this disease. For the families who live with the worry. For those who have spent years counting carbs, checking levels, taking injections and always being prepared for the unexpected. And for everyone who has been affected by diabetes in some way.
This walk is personal to me, and I’d be incredibly grateful for any support, no matter how big or small. Every donation will help us raise awareness and support those living with diabetes.
Thank you for supporting me, Zoe, and everyone affected by diabetes. ❤️
