10 Miles for a Cure: Turning a Diagnosis into Action
Earlier this year, our world changed when one of our team members was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D).
A diagnosis of T1D changes almost every aspect of daily life. But rather than allowing it to hold us back, we’ve decided to turn it into a reason to take action — together.
What is Type 1 Diabetes?
Unlike Type 2 Diabetes, Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune condition. It is not caused by lifestyle, diet, or anything someone did or didn’t do. There is nothing they could have done to prevent it.
The immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. Without insulin, the body cannot properly use glucose for energy, and without insulin, Type 1 Diabetes is life-threatening.
In simple terms, an organ that once worked automatically suddenly stops doing its job.
And currently, there is no cure.
The Reality of Living with Type 1 Diabetes
T1D is relentless. There are no days off. No holidays. No respite.
Every day involves monitoring blood glucose, calculating insulin, and constantly thinking about food, exercise, stress, illness and the many unexpected changes that can affect blood sugar levels.
Even with technology such as insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors (CGMs), there can still be middle-of-the-night alarms, dangerous lows, constant calculations and the mental burden of never being able to completely switch off.
It is an invisible, 24/7 responsibility — often carried while continuing to work, socialise, smile and live life as normally as possible.
That is the reality of Type 1 Diabetes.
Why We’re Taking on the Challenge
We may not have chosen this diagnosis, but we can choose what we do with it.
That’s why our team is taking on a 10-mile challenge to raise vital funds for Diabetes UK.
We’re doing this together to raise awareness, show our support and, most importantly, help contribute towards a future where no one has to live with T1D.
Every donation, big or small, can make a difference. Funds raised for Diabetes UK help support vital research into better treatments and, ultimately, a cure. They also provide support and guidance to people living with diabetes, campaign for better access to diabetes technology and care, and help improve mental health support.
